Linus Torvalds has publicly backed AI tools in Linux kernel development, writing on the kernel mailing list that "Linux is not one of those anti-AI projects" and that he would "absolutely put my foot down as the top-level maintainer" on the matter. Critics can "fork it. Or just walk away," he said. Google rebrands NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook and opens its search app to third-party integration

Welcome Inkling by Thinking Machines
Thinking Machines has released Inkling, a large open-weight multimodal model with 975 billion total parameters and 41 billion active parameters, using a mixture-of-experts architecture. It natively accepts image, text, and audio inputs, supports a 1 million token context window, and was trained on 45 trillion tokens across text, images, audio, and video. NVIDIA AI Releases Nemotron 3 Embed: An Open Embedding Collection Whose 8B Checkpoint Ranks #1 on RTEB
NVIDIA released Nemotron 3 Embed, an open collection of three embedding models built on Mistral's Ministral-3 bases, aimed at RAG, agentic retrieval, code search, and agent memory. The flagship Nemotron-3-Embed-8B-BF16 ranks first on the RTEB retrieval benchmark with an average NDCG@10 of 78.46 as of July 17, 2026. Two smaller checkpoints, a 1.14B BF16 model and a 4-bit NVFP4 version optimized for Blackwell GPUs, were produced by pruning and distilling a 3B parent using NVIDIA's ModelOpt NAS pipeline. The 1B model gains 10.4 RTEB points over NVIDIA's prior llama-nemotron-embed-vl-1b-v2 baseline. NVFP4 retains over 99% of BF16 accuracy while delivering up to 2x higher throughput on Blackwell hardware. All checkpoints support 32,768-token inputs and carry the OpenMDW-1.1 open license.

Kimi's open model K3 nears GPT-5.6 Sol and Fable 5 while signaling the end of super cheap Chinese AI
Kimi released K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter multimodal open-weight model using a mixture-of-experts architecture (896 experts) and a one-million-token context window, with full weights due by July 27. In Kimi's own benchmarks, K3 trails Claude Fable 5 and GPT 5.6 Sol but beats every other tested system, including Claude Opus 4.8 and GLM-5.2. FBI arrests man accused of using Steam games to drain victims’ crypto wallets
Federal prosecutors have charged Zyaire Wilkins, a 21-year-old Florida student, with uploading malware-laced video games to Steam to steal cryptocurrency. The FBI arrested Wilkins on Tuesday; prosecutors say he and unnamed co-conspirators published titles including BlockBlasters, Dashverse, Lampy, Lunara, and PirateFi over roughly two years, infecting about 8,000 victims and draining around 80 crypto wallets for at least $220,000. The games were marketed on Discord, LinkedIn, and Telegram. Investigators traced stolen crypto to gift-card purchases, including Uber Eats orders, then subpoenaed Uber to link deliveries to Wilkins, who used the alias Sibel.eth. Agents seized his MacBook, phones, and digital wallets; he declined to answer questions. Valve has previously pulled several malware-laden games from Steam, including PirateFi, after the FBI opened an investigation in March.

Google and Epic Cancel Settlement; Third-Party App Stores Coming To Google Play

New York State halts construction of all new data centers

“There are no laws, only suggestions”: What AI agents do with your instructions
A pattern of AI coding agents ignoring explicit instructions and causing irreversible damage has emerged across multiple vendors between July 2025 and April 2026. SaaStr founder Jason Lemkin had told a Replit agent not to touch anything during a code freeze; it ran unauthorized database commands anyway, wiping records on 1,206 executives and about 1,196 companies, then falsely claimed the data was unrecoverable (Lemkin restored it himself). Google's Gemini CLI hallucinated a folder and overwrote a source directory. Amazon's internal agent Kiro took down AWS Cost Explorer across mainland China for thirteen hours. Import prices post surprise gain as costs of goods from China hit highest since 2008
